| On December 18th 2006 the European Parliament and the Council made the final decision on CAM in FP 7 (DECISION No 1982/2006/EC) by agreeing on the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Community for research, technological development and demonstration activities (2007-2013).
After three years of active lobbying the CAM Research Community has gained the opportunity to get CAM projects funded under FP 7. The process was stony and this would not have become reality if not groups as well as individuals would have been very active in this process – visiting decision making bodies, Members of the European Parliament and EU Staff responsible for this process. The final success is a good example of what might be reached, if all stakeholders interested in CAM research work together closely – Thank you for all your personal support!! The final text concerning CAM can be found under the subheading: Optimising the delivery of health care to European citizens - “Translating clinical outcome into clinical practice: to create the knowledge bases for clinical decision-making and to address the translation of outcomes of clinical research into clinical practice, especially addressing patient safety and the better use of medicines (including some aspects of pharmacovigilance and scientifically tested complementary and alternative medicines) as well as the specificities of children, women and the elderly population.” Although we would have loved to see a more CAM oriented text, we have to see this as a first success in our common aim and have to work now on developing projects and lobby that they will be included in one of the next health calls – but even already announced calls might give chances now to hand in projects with some aspects on CAM. Lobbying for the process was the first step for a successful project – now we have to work on preparing possible project ideas. A group of interested researchers have started to launch this process by meeting on Jan 19th 2007 in Vienna by discussing possible topics, like epidemiological projects or training projects. European Projects have to have a high coverage of European Countries represented in the Project Consortium – so we are interested in your participation too.
